Is the NCA like the FBI?
It was established in 2013 as a non-ministerial government department, replacing the Serious Organised Crime Agency and absorbing the formerly separate Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) as one of its commands. Like its predecessor SOCA, the NCA has been dubbed the “British FBI” by the media.
How long is NCA vetting?
All paperwork received by the NCA vetting unit must include the name of an NCA sponsor. How long will it take for my clearance to be processed? The average turnaround of routine clearances from receipt of correct paperwork to confirmation of either NCA standards or NSV is 3 months.

Do NCA agents carry guns?
It is the firm enforcement of existing laws at street level by unarmed, foot-patrolling constables. But NCA officials can be granted the same powers as sworn constables, to arrest, to search premises and to carry firearms.

1.2 The NCA has been established as a Non-Ministerial Department (NMD)1 – in other words a government department in its own right – operationally independent of the Home Office and established to fight serious and organised crime.
Can you join the NCA with a criminal record?
The NCA Vetting Unit not only completes National Security Vetting (SC&DV), but also our own NCA Standards checks which assess the risk from criminality. We will not normally consider applications from anyone with criminal convictions or cautions.
What are the limitations of the National Crime Agency?
NCA only can predict the absence of an outcome, not the presence of the outcome. NCA focuses on single conditions (and their combinations) that prevent the outcome to occur.
Are NCA officers warranted?
NCA Investigators are ‘triple warranted’ with the powers of police, Customs and Immigration officers. You’ll work closely with police, Regional Organised Crime Units, other law enforcement agencies such as HM Revenue & Customs and international law enforcement partners.
