On 1 September 2020, the NCTJ Level 5 Diploma in Journalism was introduced. This qualification will replace the Level 3 Diploma in Journalism after a transisition period. This change reflects the increased level of digital skills and knowledge used by journalists over the last few years.
Is NCTJ equivalent to NVQ?
The NCTJ, which accredits courses at 41 colleges and universities across the country, will administer the new qualification which replaces the National Vocational Qualification in journalism, run by the Newspaper Society. Companies now using the Newspaper NVQ will transfer students onto the NCTJ’s training structure.

How do I qualify for NCTJ?
It is not compulsory to sit the exams but students must pass the exams and the portfolio to gain the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism. In order to gain the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, you must complete the four mandatory skills modules plus a selection of elective skills modules – reaching a minimum of 82 credits.
