a Mediterranean refuge in the best golf resort in Spain

Can a golf resort become a nature reserve? The biologist Oriol Dalmau has proposed that this be the case. He is a strong advocate that golf courses and resorts can, if approached correctly, provide a great diversity of habitats in which large numbers of species can thrive.

In his work for PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness, Dalmau has achieved the restoration of a wetland ecosystem, including the cultivation of vegetation around the perimeter of the golf course’s lakes, the creation and seasonal preservation of ponds and the treatment of regression of natural streams and their flora. In addition, he has worked to conserve the native fauna and take care of the organic garden full of seasonal vegetables and the million bees that produce the native honey.

“Every day we work so that PGA Catalunya, with more than 500 hectares of Mediterranean forest, has a robust green infrastructure, rich in a multitude of species that have been in decline throughout the territory and protecting the environment that surrounds us, so that each one of us of our visitors can feel more connected with nature. We have achieved the recolonization of almost extinct species, such as the otter, which has found refuge and food in the PGA Catalunya reservoir”, explains Dalmau.

For visitors to enjoy this nature reserve, at the heart of the complex is the five-star Hotel Camiral, which is part of The Leading Hotels of the World. With a contemporary design, created by the architect Lázaro Rosa-Violán, which invites nature to enter from every corner, filling the space with peace and light.

Next to it, the new and pioneering Wellness Center, a space where ancestral treatments are combined with cutting-edge technology, nutrition, led by the nutritionist Mireia Cervera, and movement with different experiences for holistic well-being.

During your stay you can also enjoy every corner of the resort and do activities to discover it: cycling, yoga, bird watching, natural routes with Oriol Dalmau himself to learn about the biodiversity of the area or walks through vineyards. And for golf lovers, two courses of great international recognition and practice facilities with cutting-edge technology.

Objective: for a golf resort to be a true nature reserve

The commitment of PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness, named the best golf resort in Spain and located in the region of La Selva, is to increase the biodiversity of all the ecosystems found within the resort and on its two acclaimed golf courses.

Oriol Dalmau and the entire PGA Catalunya team are working to make the complex a de facto nature reserve. To do this, it has adopted a maintenance methodology that is more in line with that of parks and nature reserves and that responds to the policies of the European Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020-2030.

In addition, they already have international recognition with the IAGTO Sustainability Award for Nature Protection in 2020 and, more recently, being a finalist in the GEA Awards for the environmental project of the year.
