This La Liga season in Spain has been marked by the firings of coaches in the first round of the championship. Nothing else Levante has appointed three, FC Barcelona one and now Deportivo Alavés joins who announced the hiring of Basque coach José Luis Mendilibar to take charge of the Blue and White team until the end of this season.

Mendilibar takes over from Javi Calleja. The one who was ’s coach accumulates more than 20 years on the bench. His career began shortly after hanging up his boots as a player for CDArratia (1994-96). After that, he went through the lower categories of Athletic de Bilbao (1996-01) and Aurrera de Vitoria (2001-02). After that, he traveled to the Canary Islands to take charge of UD Lanzarote (2002-04). His good performance on the islands catapulted him back to Euskadi to reach the club that, until now, has best been impregnated with the character and dedication that mark Mendilibar’s philosophy: SD Eibar. In this first stage in the gunsmith team he was about to go up to the First division, which opened the doors of Athletic Bilbao.

After a short stint at San Mamés, and two seasons of uneven results in Valladolid, Mendilibar signed for Osasuna to achieve the permanence of the rojillo club, something he achieved. Three seasons later, Mendilibar’s fate headed to the Levante, where he had a short stay, and from there, again, to Eibar.

Although, without a doubt, Mendilibar is known for his work in Eibar where he managed to get his team to play good football and spend six years in the first division, two of them in the top 10. With him was born the phrase “In Ipurúa any team can kneel down.” Real Madrid, Barca and other greats of the competition suffered greatly on many occasions to win there.

Now, Mendilibar arrives at Alavés with the aim of achieving permanence in the highest category.
