CANCUN, Q. ROO.- Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr will open the boxing calendar in September, when he faces veteran Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz. The ring will be buzzing with activity this month, with at least three fighters putting their world belts on the line or starting their title run.

The ‘Destroyer’ Ruiz will fight Ortiz on September 4 at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, California. This will be the Mexican-American’s first fight since May 2021, when he defeated Chris Arreola by unanimous decision, while the Cuban will have his second match of the year, after defeating Charles Martin by technical knockout in January.

Andy arrives with a record of 34 wins, 22 by knockouts and two losses. The former champion tries to mend the road, after losing the belts to Anthony Joshua in 2019. The boxer will have his first fight, after leaving the ‘Canelo Team’.

While the 43-year-old ‘King Kong’ wants to show that he is still valid in the world of boxing and extend his record of 33 wins, two losses and a couple of cancellations. This is considered a World Boxing Council heavyweight title eliminator fight.

The Ortiz-Ruiz undercard will kick off boxing activity in September and includes the likes of Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz against Eduardo Ramirez, the winner of which could seek a lightweight belt. It will also mark the return of Abner Mares to the ring against Miguel Flores.

CHAMPIONS DEFEND THEIR BELTS

The activity will continue on September 16, the date that Saúl Álvarez will complete his trilogy against Gennady Golovkin, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. ‘Canelo’ will defend his titles as absolute champion of the super middleweights.

While on the 23rd of that month, Shakur Stevenson and Robson Conciencao will face each other for the super featherweight belts of the World Council and the World Boxing Organization.
