Cuban Arlen López won his second Olympic boxing gold medal on Wednesday by defeating Britain’s Benjamin Whittaker in the light heavyweight final at Kokugikan Arena.

Lopez edged out a defensive Whittaker to win the bout on the scorecards of four of the five judges. Cuba had never climbed to the top of the podium in the light heavyweight category in its award-winning Olympic boxing record until Julio César La Cruz claimed gold at Rio 2016.

López is the second Cuban boxer to win a second gold medal at a different weight by defeating a British man in two days, after the triumph of Roniel Iglesias the day before. Lopez was crowned in the middleweight division in Rio.

Imam Khataev of the Russian Olympic Committee and Loren Alfonso, born in Cuba but competing for Azerbaijan, shared the bronze at light heavyweight.
