The national team is represented by nine boxers at the World Championship. The World Boxing Championship of the International Boxing Association will be held until November 6.

Boxing arrived in Azerbaijan at the beginning of the last century, with the influx of workers, engineers and experts from Russia and Europe to work in the oil industry. In 1924, the boxers ‘union founded the first boxing federation, and amateur boxers’ encounters were held in Baku.

National boxers win many prestigious awards and always raise the national flag at international tournaments.

In 2000, at the Sydney Olympics, boxer Vugar Alakbarov defeated a number of stronger and more experienced rivals, and won a bronze medal, Azerbaijan’s first Olympic medal in boxing.

2003 was another memorable year, as Aghasi Mammadov wrote his name in the annals of the country’s boxing history. He became the first Azerbaijani to obtain the title of world champion.

Today, the younger generation continues the successes of athletes in recent years and maintains the country’s sporting honor at the Olympic Games.
