The 2016 season was one of the most intense in Formula 1. Two teammates fought for the title: Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. And everything happened. Piques on the track and also off it. Friendship was impossible. Rosberg himself has explained it in the first person.
In statements to ‘Eurosport’, the German admits that this relationship was very complicated, especially in 2016, when they fought for the title of world champion: “It’s not something that came from before, it happened while we were fighting for the title”.
“Unfortunately, that’s the way things are, friendships don’t work when you fight for victory in every race or for the World Cup,” acknowledges the former world champion that year.
“It built up every weekend, if you want to be a champion, you can’t play. You have to test the limits and get into gray areas to win, especially when both drivers are at such a high level,” he says.
Rosberg remembers how that brutal battle was: “I don’t regret anything, it was a sensational time and we had a great fight.”
“I am very proud of that, but now we have a more neutral relationship, which is good, and it is funny because we are fighting each other again in Extreme E”, closed the world champion.
After that world championship, Rosberg said goodbye to Formula 1. And Valtteri Bottas, who became his replacement, could not fight with Hamilton for the championship, becoming his squire.
