During Hispanic Heritage Month, the UFC Spanish page made a series of publications in relation to the main Spanish-speaking fighters who have climbed into the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) cage and those who remain in force within the company. Although Marlon Chito Vera is Ecuador’s main reference since 2014 in the bantamweight division and one of the South American figures, the Manabi was not the first representative of our country in a UFC event. Since this month, Vera ceased to have the privilege of being the only tricolor with a contract with the company, because in the fifth season of the Dana White’s Contender Series, Michael Morales was signed from Orense. With this, the list of fighters of Ecuadorian blood linked to the UFC is made up of three men and one woman.

“The first representative of Ecuadorian blood in the cage was Rudyard Moncayo,” the UFC website reports.

The publication indicates that Moncayo sent a VHS and was accepted to fight in the function UFC 6: Clash of Titans, on July 14, 1995 in Casper, Wyoming, United States.

The result was a defeat for the Ecuadorian blood in a duel with the American Patrick Smith (+). Legends such as Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn and Tank Abbott also participated in the event. The lawsuit lasted 1 minute 8 seconds and was taken without objection by Smith by submission.

“Moncayo did not compete in the UFC again, but the flag was associated with the octagon from its first events,” says the page’s report.

Minutes before the fight, Moncayo was introduced as a fighter from Guayaquil, Ecuador, based in Santa Ana, California. He was 25 years old at the time and his specialty was kenpo karate. While Smith, who was even a participant in UFC 1: The Beginning, in November 1993, he was 31 years old and his strength was kickboxing. The announcer was the still current Michael Buffer.

Thus, Marlon Vera on November 15, 2014 became the second Ecuadorian to climb the UFC octagon fighting in the 135-pound category. His contract was obtained at TUF Latin America.

In the female branch appears Carla Esparza, born in California but daughter of an Ecuadorian from Tosagua, Manabí. Esparza was the inaugural 115-pound champion by winning the TUF 20 reality show with a submission to Rose Namajunas on December 12, 2014. Seven years after that Latin milestone, Carla is close to a new belt fight.

And the last to join the UFC discipline is Michael Morales Hurtado, born in Pasaje, El Oro province. His potential despite his youth (22 years old) was demonstrated in a fascinating fight at the Dana White’s Contender Series event, the September 21, 2021, which earned him a public congratulation from the boss, Dana White, and a contract to be able to debut soon.
