Only Nico Rosberg has managed to wrest a Formula 1 championship from Lewis Hamilton since he has been at Mercedes. For Valtteri Bottas it became a nightmare to run alongside the Briton. He has remembered what happened at the end of the 2018 season.

He has done it in statements to ‘Motor Sport Magazine’, where he has spoken of his worst moment: “At the end of 2018 I really was about to leave it. I was very close to that”.

“It was basically because I didn’t understand why I couldn’t beat Lewis in those two years. I was putting a lot of pressure on myself,” says the now Alfa Romeo driver.

At that time he came to hate competition: “You’re supposed to like Formula 1 because it’s great. But for me, at that time, it wasn’t great at all. I went to South America during the winter holidays. I wanted to find fun and motivation, and I did it.

In 2019 the story remained similar, although Bottas did feel that he could compete: “I was ahead of Lewis several times and even led the championship at some point. It was a strong year. Then Lewis’ consistency came. His performance in general was very Well, I couldn’t match that.”

Bottas left Mercedes without being able to beat Hamilton. His goal was to look for new challenges, and he has achieved it at Alfa Romeo. A car that has nothing to do with the Mercedes but that does allow it to at least fight for points.

To the Silver Arrows came George Russell. And he, at least for now, is beating a Hamilton who is signing a season with very mixed results.
