Although the letter that declares that they have passed to professionalism is still unsigned, the Dominican Federation of Amateur Boxing (Fedoboxa) assumes, to a great extent, that from now on it will no longer have the fighters Leonel de los Santos, Rohan Polanco and Eury Cedeño.
That is why Fedoboxa, chaired by Rubén García, already has its focus on the new talents that will fill those gaps. “Sure you do,” Garcia said of the next substitutes. “We have a team of young boys, those places are occupied by them,” he said.
The first measuring stick of this group will be the men’s national superior tournament for November 11, 12 and 13 at the Fencing Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
For this tournament the participation of 85 to 90 boxers in 13 categories is expected.
“The talent is there. We have a lot of athletes. The one who left, bye bye, but we will not look back, it is forward, preparing them for Paris 2024 ”, he said in relation to the year in which the Olympic Games will be.
He expressed that the superior national championship will be the most classy event to be held for that group of young people who seek to occupy the positions left by the three gladiators, which competed in the last Tokyo 2020 Games.
He specified that “it is not by name or surname”, that the new fighters will be chosen, who have already gone from youth to superior. “It’s the one that won,” says Garcia. He stated that in the Dominican Republic “boxing is on.”
De los Santos has already proven professionalism with four fights, which count by victories, the last of which was against his compatriot Jonathan Mariano, by knockout, on September 23.
Dominican boxing will have four boxers (two men and two women) who will represent the country in that sport in the first Youth Pan American Games, in Cali-Valle 2021 (November 25 / December 5).
This Monday they traveled to Ecuador with their two coaches where they will do a training base in that country and will return to the island on November 7 and then they will leave from here to the Pan-American event.
