The Capitanes de la Ciudad de México are preparing to bring G League basketball to Mexico City, more specifically to the Mexico City Arena. After confirming that the team will play in the multidisciplinary venue north of the metropolis, all those involved did not hesitate to express their joy.

“(I’m) looking forward to meeting everyone, if you see me at the Arena, don’t be shy about greeting me. I’m very excited about this season”, recognized Nick Lagios, general manager of Capitanes, who points out that the team’s priority will be to be that boost of young talents, compete against other teams and keep the calls to the NBA, highlighting the fact that in 2021-2022 had three call-ups: Gary Clark, Alfonzo McKinnie, and Matt Mooney.

“There is not much to sell the idea (of player calls to the NBA), they already know that there is a good situation in Capitanes and that the possibility of being called is there and they hope that it will continue to develop like this in the future”.

And it is that in Capitanes they seek to have that Latin identity that has characterized the team practically since its foundation in 2016, when it was profiled as a team in the National Professional Basketball League, a competition in which they achieved two runner-up finishes.

“The plan is to have Latin American prospects, at least two Mexicans on the roster. We focus on this. Last year we were the team with the most call-ups to the NBA, we want an experienced base so that the roster has depth, ”he continued, referring to the makeup of the roster.

On this same line spoke Ramón Díaz, who has been coach of Capitanes since the team emerged. In addition to the objectives of competing in the NBA G League, it is sought that more Mexicans and Latin Americans have the opportunity to play in the Best Basketball in the World and that it be through this development league.

“There was always a bet on a Mexican team, now in an international league the message is clear: bet on Latin American players, including Mexicans. Rest assured that Capitanes has that objective of Latin identity and of putting the greatest number of Latin Americans and Mexicans in the NBA”, pointed out the Spanish strategist.

On the possibility of having a call from a Mexican to the NBA and that this player could be champion as happened to , he is excited within the Captains entity. “Hopefully we can get that call-up from a Mexican, Latino player who fulfills the dream that Juan Toscano once had and that thanks to his work and effort he has achieved it. We dream and work every day to make this a reality”, Diaz applauded.

Let us remember that Juan Toscano trained as a professional in the LNBP with Fuerza Regia and that he made the jump to the NBA with the Santa Cruz Warriors, with whom he polished himself and made the jump to the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. With the Warriors he won the NBA Finals in June and today he is a player for the Los Angeles Lakers.
