Nine boxers from the largest island of the Antilles are ready to participate in the boxing poster that will take place this Saturday, May 7, at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino, in the city of Hialeah, Florida.
There is still one boxer pending approval by the Florida State Athletic Commission, cruiserweight Carlos Fomenta Romero, who could be the tenth Cuban.
The main fight will be between the undefeated puncher from Camagüey Lenier Eunice Peró Justiz and the Puerto Rican resident of Tamarac, Florida, Héctor Pérez (7-4-3 KO), who has had an eight-year professional career in the cruiserweight and super heavyweight divisions. .
Last March, Pérez lost by unanimous decision in the 8th round against the American Norman Neely (12-0-8 KO).
Peró (6-0-3 KO) is the favorite to keep his undefeated professional record. He had an outstanding amateur career.
He was the cruiserweight champion at the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 in Singapore, champion in the World Super Series in full weights and in that same weight he was king at the Pan American Games in Toronto-2015, after defeating in the final Venezuelan Edgar Muñoz.
Peró also has victories against Cuban boxers of the stature of Erislandy Savón, Heinrich Ruiz, Osmay Acosta, Yoandry Toirac and the undefeated super heavyweights in professional boxing, Frank Sánchez Faure from Guantanamo and José Ángel Larduet from Santiago, who lives in Germany.
In 2010 Peró disputed the heavyweight title in the President Cup, held in Astana, Kazakhstan. In that event Leinier lost in the final unanimous decision in three rounds against the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk.
Usyk is the current professional monarch of the World Association, the International Federation and the World Boxing Organization, after defeating Britain’s Anthony Joshua in London last September.
Both Usyk (91 kilograms) and Joshua (over 91 kilograms) won Olympic gold in London-2012.
The other Cuban professional boxers who will fight this Saturday (with transmission through USA Fite on the internet) will be the cruiserweights Anthony Martínez and Ulysses Díaz, Isaac Carbonell (light heavyweight), Víctor Abreu (bantamweight), Hugo Noriega (welter), Orestes Velázquez (lightweight), Ariel Pérez de la Torre (featherweight) and super welterweight Liván Navarro.
The boxing poster where the largest number of Cuban boxers appeared (10) was on November 1, 1996 at the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center in Florida.
In that event 10 Cubans showed up and they all won, Diosbelys Hurtado, Ramón and Iván Ledón, Mario Iribarren, René Valdés, Juan Carlos Suárez, Joel Casamayor, Ramón Garbey and the Castillo brothers, Eliseo and Eliécer.
It was a night with pure Cuban flavor. We expect something similar on the May 7 poster.
