Promoter Eddie Hearn said Castillo, 33, “reacted” to the treatment of medical personnel in the Tottenham Hotspur stadium ring. The fight was one of the preliminaries of the world heavyweight title fight in which Briton Anthony Joshua was dethroned by Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk.
Castillo’s legs were cramped, apparently from a seizure when he fell to the mat, and referee Bob Williams immediately declared the fight over in the second round.
Smith, in his first fight after losing to Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in the super middleweight category in December, jumped to the ropes to celebrate, but gave up immediately after, worried about his opponent whom he hit on the temple.
Later, Lawrence Okolie first defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) cruiserweight title, knocking out undefeated Montenegrin Dilan Prazovic in the third round.
Okolie, a 28-year-old Londoner, won the vacant title in March, when he beat Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki.
