EU sanctions Abramovich, owner of Chelsea soccer club

The European Union has imposed sanctions on Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich as part of a new package of measures against Russia.

The EU has included the Russian billionaire in its updated list of individuals who will have their assets frozen and travel banned due to his role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich, 55, was already sanctioned by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government last week. Seven wealthy Russians, including the aluminum tycoon, had their assets frozen under Russian sanctions in response to the invasion. Abramovich was also suspended as manager of Chelsea.

The EU said that Abramovich “has had privileged access to the (Russian) president and has had very good relations with him. This connection with the Russian president has helped her keep his significant wealth.”
