The reigning FIA F2 champion, Australian Oscar Piastri, is in the focus of the Williams team’s interest for next year. The Alpine driver is banned from F2 for being champion and did not find a seat in either F1 or Formula E, and the French have already announced their willingness to find him a place in F1 if they do not have free seats in 2023.
It was confirmed by Sky Sports F1 columnist Ted Kravitz, who was unable to clarify whether he would take the place from the efficient Alex Albon or the ill-fated but wealthy Nicholas Latifi. If the claims of the Williams leadership that they no longer need “paid drivers” are true, the choice would be more than obvious. But Albon doesn’t provide big sponsors, and Piastri, with all his talent, doesn’t either.
