Dutch (Red Bull) used an overtaking in a pit stop (undercut) to overcome the British (Mercedes) in the US Grand Prix and establish itself as the leader of the Formula One World Championship.

The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) completed the podium and the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) finished seventh. The also Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine) had to leave.

The race was tactical and exciting. ‘Mad’ Max started from pole, but could not defend it on the first lap, in which Hamilton won the place from second on the grid.

The British shot, but was not able to open a gap. On the contrary, the Red Bull driver had a better pace than his rival and advanced his pit stop on lap 11 as a strategy to pass the seven-time champion.

From behind, Fernando Alonso had them with the two Alfa Romeos. With Kimi Raikkonen he could not, but with Antonio Giovinazzi, with controversy in both cases.

Verstappen began to notice the degradation and Hamilton was less than three seconds. The Red Bull driver stopped on lap 30. The seven-time champion shot. There was a race again with a difference of 16 seconds that Mad ‘Max’ lowered to just over 11 when the Mercedes changed tires.

Between one and the other, about nine seconds, but Verstappen’s tires had eight more laps. The gap narrowed and with 13 laps to go Hamilton was 4.5 seconds away.

The Dutchman set personal fastest laps to combat his opponent’s high pace for the title and did so on a very rushed last lap. Stevenage’s 56 laps fell short of the Austin circuit and conceded a stinging loss.

Checo Pérez completed the podium by maintaining his third position at the start, and so did the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).

Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren took fifth place and Carlos Sainz gave up sixth in the final laps to the benefit of Finn Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes).

Fernando Alonso, after a combative race, had to leave his car in the pits after 51 laps.
