Every September, and for 23 years now, a group of friends from Ribadesella and the Madrid town of El Molar meet at the La Rasa de Berbes Golf Club to play their annual friendly tournament. Yesterday, both teams enjoyed a family day with sport on the back. And never better said, since the Asturian picona is one of the prizes awarded to the winners of the meeting.
It was at the end of the nineties of the last century when this tournament was organized for the first time, at the beginning of the Berbes golf course. “We were delighted and decided to come every year,” explained Javier del Sarro, captain of the El Molar team. And it is that the spectacular landscape on which the 18 holes of the course extend did not leave Madrid indifferent. Since then, and throughout these two decades, they only missed this special appointment in 2020, when the covid-19 pandemic prevented the meeting.
The friendly was played under a scorching sun, with the Cantabrian Sea and the Picos de Europa as magnificent witnesses. Among the players, a total of 28, there were men, women and young people. “We are trying to get new people to join this tradition,” said Luis Pablo González, president of the Berbes Club.
After an intense exercise, an intimate party took place that concluded with a great meal with lamb on the stake as the main course. Afterwards, there was an award ceremony. Luis Pablo González was the male winner of nine holes and Beatriz Domínguez took the female category.
The originality of this championship is given by the meaning of the distinctions awarded to the winners. Instead of the classic green jacket of the mythical Masters of Augusta, in the United States, a canoeist vest, a montera picona, a hórreo and a silver apple are given. All in the purest Asturian style. Finally, both groups toasted with the illusion of meeting again next year.
