the past June 24 and 25the Las Caldas de Oviedo municipal golf course hosted the second of the qualifying tests of the Circuit TUR 43 of this year. Nearly a hundred players signed up for the competition. We wanted to talk to one of these golfers, Gerardo Albornoz Garcia-Bernardo, 50 years old and a resident of Oviedo, to get a closer look at his impressions on this sport, in general, and on the TUR 43 Circuit, in particular. Precisely, Gerardo Albornoz was one of the winners of the test, since he was the first classified in the second category, with 45 points.

– How many years have you been playing golf?

-Although I played as a child, I have been playing golf for about four or five years as an adult. I re-enlisted thanks to a great friend of mine, a close friend, who played golf and knew that I had played as a child. He was the one who encouraged me. I was going through a difficult personal situation, because seven years ago I lost my wife, Paula, to cancer and he pulled me because he knew that golf was going to come in handy for my mind. So it was. It was a gift from my friend and I’m delighted.

– Are you federated?

-Yes I am. I belong to the Las Caldas Club, with my handicap, and I am delighted.

– What is your opinion of the club and the services it provides?

-It is wonderful. I have a special affection for it, because I’m from Oviedo and I have it five minutes from home: it’s a luxury. The people who work at the club are almost like family. It is very well cared for. It is public and gives you all the facilities so that you find everything very well. But the human team is what I would highlight. Then, the field is beautiful and it is located in a unique place, very close to the capital of Asturias.

– What advice would you give to someone starting out in the world of golf?

I don’t know if I’m the right person to give advice. I could tell you about my experience. I think that golf brings tranquility, silence, being able to be with yourself… because otherwise you don’t hit the ball. Then there is a lot of silence and education and it is something that, sometimes, you miss in society or in other sports. In addition, you can play it as a family, regardless of age. I think it is a sport that I will be able to play with my grandchildren tomorrow. In addition, you can make summer and tourism plans linked to golf.

– Do you think that the practice of this sport is encouraged enough in our country?

-No. I don’t think it’s encouraged enough. Perhaps we should include it more at an educational level, in schools to do workshops, so that children also sometimes know what it means to be silent, but concentrated and having fun competing. In the end, in golf you compete against yourself and against the course. It is a very attractive sport to play as a family.

– Last year you also participated in the TUR 43 Golf Circuit, what did you think of the experience?

-It was fantastic. It caught my attention because it is a very careful circuit, in which the player is treated like a king. All the details are taken care of. They treat you to quality, well-thought-out gifts. And, of course, that is highly recommended. In fact, this year I am participating in the second edition, again here in Las Caldas and I am delighted. Apart from being challenging to compete, the organization of this circuit has been fantastic. Of the circuits that I have played last year, if I have to stay with one, it is this one. There can always be points for improvement to polish, but here what one comes to is to enjoy and, of course, in this championship it is achieved.
