Matías Fondato played in the Under 16 of the national team, made his first debut at Newel’s and fate took him to Europe, but he left football to dedicate himself to painting.
Six years ago he has been based in New Castle, an English city, and seven years ago he retired as a player. He never left football, although now he lives it from his artistic side.
“It is a rare situation, it is a hobby that I have all my life, especially drawing, and I had always been curious about painting,” he explained, and told how he began to dedicate himself to making portraits. “I make a painting of a player who at the time played in New Castle, North American, with whom I became very close friends. I did it as a hobby, as a normal gift. He published it on his social networks and began to have questions about who the artist is and he referred them to me, requests came to me ”.
Although he always liked to draw, he was never immersed in the world of art, so he began to investigate, to practice, and to take commissions. “Obviously I am aware that I am privileged, that my past as a player has helped me, it has opened doors for me for a question that maybe ex-teammates or ex-coaches always give you a hand ”, he ventured.
“I never took off and I don’t think I’m going to take off from football either for a question that is my great passion, obviously ”, reflected Matías. “The pandemic pushed me, as there was not much to do, to turn the lights to the art side, because imagine that here there were moments that were three, four or five months in which there was nothing to do.”
“Until that moment what I did was take orders, and many times people asked me,” Don’t you have something from Michael Jordan, or something from Diego, or something from Messi? ” And there I began to paint to have stock and I began to expand a little in music, movies, icons, history. That’s when I started to give him a little more attention, “he said.
Matías explained that his main technique is to paint acrylic on canvas. “I am a very curious and very self-demanding person, so I do a painting and the next one I want it to be 10 times better than the previous oneSo I watch a lot of videos, I ask questions, I talk a lot with artists, I go to galleries and then give it a little touch and make it mine ”. He was also trying to paint with oil and watercolor, or jean jackets.
“Obviously I am a person who does not come from the stick of art, I had to read and nourish myself with a lot of information because I do like to be prepared”, He expressed.
Currently he has put aside requests to dedicate himself to working on a collection of Premier League legends, from the last 20 years, and “do a kind of exhibition.”
His workplace is a studio, although due to restrictions during the worst waves of the English pandemic, he had to leave it and set up a space in his house. “I like having my space, my music, my tranquility, my mate. Mate is essential “, River.
There are countless portraits that Matías did, and that he was able to give to idols such as Lionel Messi, Raheem Sterling, Eric “Coco” Lamela, and N’Golo Kante.
