How much money do Formula 1 drivers earn in 2022?

Formula 1 is one of the sports competitions that generates the most money worldwide, due not only to its valid sponsors around the world, but also to the series of sponsors that support it. Likewise, the pilots who compete receive multimillion-dollar earnings, several of them being among the athletes who earn the most money annually.

An example of this is that in the 2022 season, just over $200 million is paid in net salaries alone for the drivers who compete in F1. The undisputed leader in earnings is Lewis Hamilton, as the seven-time world champion receives $40 million per campaign, well above the rest of his colleagues.

The Briton is followed by Max Verstappen, current F1 champion, who as part of the Red Bull team receives an annual salary of $25 million. Next is Spaniard Fernando Alonso with $20m at the Alpine team, followed by Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, both with $15m salaries.

Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari earn $10 million per season, similar to Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, who receives $8 million as Red Bull’s second driver. This notable difference in salaries with figures like Alonso and Vettel show that experience and status as champions end up weighing on negotiations.

In the lower part of earnings in the season, the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda stands out, who as part of AlphaTauri receives a salary of $750,000, contrasting notably with the great stars of the category. Similar to him are Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin of Haas, as well as Guanyu Zhou of Alfa Romeo, all with a salary of $1 million.

This big difference has sparked a discussion about a possible salary cap, which could be evaluated by the organizers as of the 2023 season, but everything is still in the field of speculation.
