Kyrie Irving has already passed health protocols. More than 100 NBA players are still waiting to take that step.

The Eastern Conference leaders Brooklyn Nets announced Tuesday that Irving, along with Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge, exceeded NBA protocols – an important step toward getting back on the court.

Other teams are preparing to play more games with decimated rosters — severely in some cases. Atlanta added three more players to the protocols, bringing its total to a surprising 13 – a number that doesn’t even include assistant coaches, who will also be absent.

“It’s a sick feeling,” said Nate McMillan, Atlanta coach, whose team is about to start a seven-game road trip. “The moment is definitely bad for losing players. Every day we are wondering what will happen next ”.

Across the league, as of Tuesday afternoon, the number of players who had entered the protocols was 122, with some of them about to return and others just beginning their period of isolation. Also ruled out for now are five coaches, with the most recent addition of Oklahoma City’s Mark Daigneault, who entered protocols Tuesday.

Daigneault joins Frank Vogel of the Los Angeles Lakers; Billy Donovan from Chicago; Chauncey Billups of Portland and Monty Williams of Phoenix as head coaches who are out. Many teams will also be without assistants, physical therapists, physical trainers, media and public relations personnel, as well as equipment personnel and video managers, among others.

“I don’t know what tomorrow means,” said David Fizdale, an assistant coach for the Lakers, who will replace Vogel. “Actually, I do not know. I do not want to assume anything about tomorrow in the NBA today. “

Irving has not played this season, in large part because of his decision not to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Initially, the Nets weren’t willing to partially count on him. Irving has not been eligible for the team’s home games due to local New York rules that require players to be vaccinated.

At the beginning of the month Irving and the team decided that he would return – even for away games – to allow Brooklyn to overcome the physical demands the team faces in the face of numerous absences.
