the italian player Philippo Celli (Olgiata Golf Club) has been proclaimed Absolute Amateur European Golf Champion, after the dispute of the Absolute Men’s Individual European Championship that was held on the Parador de the saler (Valencia).
The transalpine golfer completed the last day with 69 strokes, for a total of 280 strokes and was the fair winner with all deserved after making a magnificent championship.
The best Spanish player of this European Individual Men’s Amateur Golf has been Javier Barcos, in fourth position. The Navarrese was always in the fight for the title until the last day, but he was unable to add his name to the record of this tournament, where he only appears as the former Spanish winner, Sergio Garcia, the best in the 1995 edition held back then at the RCG El Prat.
After Barcos, in fifth position, another Spaniard qualified, Jorge Hao from Madrid.
Presence of four Valencians
Regarding the participation of Valencian players, four played this Men’s Individual European Championship, the best players were Carlos Abril and Josele Ballester, tied for thirty-ninth place. The other two Valencians, Carlos Balbastre and Carlos Alejandro Garre (who arrived at El Saler after proclaiming himself Absolute Champion of Spain), they failed to make the cut.
The dutch Kiet Van Der Weelewho plays under license from the Golf Federation of the Valencian Community (FGCV), was classified in the twenty-eighth position. Whenever a prestigious tournament is held at the Parador de El Saler, be it professional like the Spanish Open, or amateur like this Men’s Individual European Championship, the famous record of 62 strokes achieved by the German Bernard Langer in the Spanish Open in 1984 and which still stands as a course record.
