The excess of golf carts in Isla Mujeres is something that worries restaurateurs and merchants of the destination, especially in times of low season, when not all of them are used but they do remain on the streets, obstructing many spaces.

The island has grown significantly in recent years and with the economic reactivation its high occupancy has been notorious, although many of those who cross do so to spend a few hours and return the same day to the mainland.

This has caused that, especially on long weekends and holiday seasons, the demand for golf carts increases exponentially and there are those who can no longer afford a cart.

Contrary to the low season months, in which although a good number of visitors are received, the demand for carts is barely 60 percent on average, leaving dozens of them unused, but in many cases parked on main avenues. .

“We know that they are necessary, but not always, and some companies, instead of having them in their warehouses, take them out in the hope that some tourist will rent them and while they remain occupying the streets throughout the day. Any day they come they can see dozens of carts parked all over the main avenue and when someone wants to come to the restaurant there is nowhere to park,” said Fanny, host of one of the restaurants on the Rueda Medina, the main avenue of the island.

In a brief tour of the area, the high demand for carts was identified even in low season, which circulate from Punta Norte to the south of the island, allowing national and foreign visitors to get to know the entire island in just a few hours.

But you could also see a large number of carts along the entire main avenue and many of these were unused, which even forced visitors who had rented one to have to double park to go down to have a drink. photo, ask about tours or see the menus of a restaurant.

The excess of golf carts has been a constant complaint over the years, even before the pandemic there were many demands to change those that had already been in service for many years and to regulate their transit through the streets of the destination, because Accidents due to not respecting speed limits or driving in the wrong direction had risen considerably.

Merchants are now asking that spaces be established to park them without affecting the image of the destination, and that they seek strategies to force the owners of rental companies to only take rented carts out of their warehouses and that those who rent are well informed. about its proper use.
