“I have always admired Ismael Laguna. As a child I began to admire his fine fencing and understood from a very young age that Ismael Laguna was, the figure who inspired all the other world champions [panameños] who came after him ”.
With this reflection, the Panamanian journalist and writer, Daniel Alonso reviews his book “Laguna: The Idol”, which was officially presented at the end of last September.
“Laguna fights until 1971, and by the year 72, Panama already had four world champions [Alfonso ‘Peppermint’ Frazer, Roberto Durán, Enrique Pinder y Ernesto Marcel]. That was due more than anything to the influence, the inspiration of Ismael Laguna, the great idol of Panamanian boxing ”, said the boxing commentator and immovable face of the program ‘The Best of Boxing’.
“In this book we are going to find a detailed detail of Ismael Laguna’s entire career as a professional. It is not a novel, it is not a biography of him. It is a detailed account, fight by fight, of his 75 fights and how he became the undisputed idol of Panamanian boxing. The book is also a recognition of the sports journalists of that time, who covered Laguna’s career, ”he emphasizes.
“The book presents with great emphasis the conquest of the lightweight world title that marked, in my opinion, a watershed in the history of Panamanian boxing, because it was the first world championship fight that took place in Panama, on April 10, 1965. The book is divided into two parts, the first one concludes with the conquest of the title at the hands of [Carlos] Ortiz and the second, ranges from the loss of the title with Ortiz to the reconquest against Mando Ramos in March 1970, in Los Angeles, California.
Alonso points out that this text “was part of a much broader investigation that I was conducting in the last 20 years on the history of boxing in Panama. Specifically, on the subject of the production of the book, having had the research already done, I took advantage of the pandemic time, since I was working from home, to shape it and be able to make its publication possible. He also assured that his literary side is just beginning.
“My original plan is more comprehensive: it is the encyclopedia of Panamanian boxing. All the detailed history since 1917, when the Professional Boxing Commission was founded in Panama. It is an idea that I am developing, which I know will take much longer, but which I hope to be able to fulfill ”, he added.
