Controversial former world champion
He twice won the world heavyweight title in the 1980s and is the youngest fighter in history to do so. At just 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old, on November 22, 1986, he lifted the WBC (World Boxing Council) belt against Trevor Berbick.
Then he managed to unify all the crowns against champions James Smith (WBA) and Tony Tucker (IBF). After several defenses, Mike was defeated by James Buster Douglas in 1990.
He has been out of the ring as a professional for 17 years after a loss against Irishman Kevin McBride. He concluded his career with a balance of 50 wins and 6 losses, with 44 knockouts; while his rival, who last fought in February 2018, has a record of 66-9, with 47 knockouts.
On June 28, 1997, in the ring of the MGM in Las Vegas, Mike was the protagonist of one of the most repudiated events in boxing history. During the fight with Evander Holyfield he bit off part of her ear.
It was the rematch that Tyson had asked for against Holyfield, who had beaten him by technical knockout in November 1996. It was seen as a fight to show that Tyson could still be the top champion in the heavyweight division again, as he did. in 1986, at the age of 20. (D)
