CANCÚN, Q. ROO.- Red Bull driver Max Verstappen stressed how important it is to be the leader of the Classification by a good margin of points, however, the Dutchman said that he was surprised to have such an advantage at this point, due to that the performance of his team and that of Ferrari has not been very different on the track.

“It is still very important to score as many points as possible at all times. Even on a bad day, like we already did in Austria. Of course the advantage we have is great, but surely it’s a bit bigger than it should be if you look at the performance of both cars,” Verstappen told Motosport.

One race before the start of the summer break, Max is leader of the Classification with 233 points, second place goes to Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, with 170 units. The third place is occupied by the Mexican Sergio Pérez with 163 and the fourth place belongs to Carlos Sainz with 144.

Verstappen is the current champion in the Drivers’ World Championship, and in the last French Grand Prix he took the opportunity to break the good streak of Ferrari, which had two wins in a row. The Dutchman was dueling with Leclerc for first place, until the Monegasque left due to an error.

“I could quickly see that our car balance wasn’t bad, but he might as well be managing a bit. It seemed like we were very competitive, but that’s what we see, we didn’t have all the data,” he noted.

With the advantage of 63 points, Max will arrive as a favorite at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last one before the summer break. Even if he dropped out of the race and Leclerc won, the Red Bull driver would retain the lead in Formula 1.
