The Mexican Golf Team is reported ready to make its presentation in the Junior Americas Cup, an event that will take place from the 1st to the 4th of August at The Club at Ruby Hill – a par 72 course designed by Jack Nicklaus – located in Livermore, California, United States.
The captains for the competition celebrating 50 years of existence are: Oscar Fraustro, who played the World Cup of Golf in 2013 and was a member of the PGA TOUR in the 2015 season, as well as Juan Diego Fernández, who played several times for the Mexican Golf Team and was member of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica in 2014.
“I am honored to be captain. I hope to contribute my experience to this group of talented young people looking to put the flag of Mexico on the higher. I’m sure it will be an unforgettable week.” Fraustro, champion of the Dominican Republic Open in 2012 and San Luis Championship in 2017.
The team led by Fraustro will have Eduardo Derbez, Manuel Barbachano, Francisco Solorza and Rafael Estrada; while with Juan Diego Fernández will be Nicolás Domínguez, Marcelo Mexsen, Pablo Colín and Manuel Cue.
“It has been a summer full of golf. I played solid in Naperville (Western Junior)and in San Diego (IMG Junior World Championship). Then I missed the cut on Bandon (US Junior Amateur), but I am very motivated to be able to play for my country”, said Eduardo Derbez, winner of the Western Junior Championship last June.
The Mexican squads will face the best players in Canada and the United States, which will be divided as follows: Alberta, Arizona, British Columbia, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Sun Country, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
The team competition is 54 holes. The best three scores count and the team’s highest score is discarded. Players also compete for the honor of being the individual medalist.
Some renowned golfers who have participated in the Junior Americas Cup are: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Anthony Kim, Kevin Na and Patrick Cantlay, among others.
