In a historic participation in the Women’s Boxing World Cup, Minerva Montiel lost against Sitora Turdibekova and was eliminated from the contest, based in Istanbul, Turkey. The 24-year-old boxer was the first Paraguayan to compete in the International Boxing Association event.

Regardless of the result, Minerva Montiel’s participation in the Women’s Boxing World Cup was historic. For the first time, the event organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA) had a Paraguayan presence. The boxer, in the featherweight category (57 kg), was the only representative of the country in Istanbul, Turkey, venue of the event.

Minerva had debuted on Wednesday with a victory over the South African champion Phiwokuhle Mnguni and this Saturday, the Guarani played her second fight, seeking the ticket to the quarterfinals. In the other corner of the ring was the winner of Asia, the Uzbek Sitora Turdibekova, who in the last round beat Trinidadian Tianna Guy.

After three rounds of three minutes each in Ring B, Montiel lost to Turdibekova by unanimous decision of the judges (5-0) and said goodbye to the IBA competition. Despite the defeat, the national sport resurfaced again with the 24-year-old fighter, who had won the ticket with the Bronze medal in the Women’s Continental Elite, in Ecuador.
