The proposal for a Coastal Marine Protected Area for Multiple Uses will have an expanded polygon that exceeds 223 thousand hectares, which will be presented to the Council of Ministers for Sustainability this quarter. In this regard, Alex Muñoz, executive director of Pristine Seas, NatGeo, indicated that “for it to be a real marine protected area it must be clear that it does not admit industrial uses such as ports, thermoelectric plants or mines on the coastline. In addition, it must prohibit trawling and, at the most allow, nature tourism activities or small-scale fishing in delimited areas. ”

On March 5, 2018, the then President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet announced in Coquimbo that the Council of Ministers had approved the creation of the Humboldt Archipelago Multiple Use Marine Protected Area in the commune of La Higuera.

According to the information, the proposal for a Coastal Marine Protected Area for Multiple Uses, defined by the working group constituted by this Government, has an expanded polygon that exceeds 223 thousand hectares, which will be presented to the Council of Ministers by the Sustainability this quarter.

But marine protection fell to practically zero in this presidential term. In addition, salmon farms continue to be authorized within national reserves and the Dominga project was approved. This reflects the little importance that the current Ministry of the Environment gives to the conservation of the main marine ecosystems in Chile. “
