Sebastian Vettel’s future in Formula 1 is totally up in the air. The German driver has put himself in the shoes of Lewis Hamilton and doubts that the ‘Great Circus’ will continue to excite the seven-time world champion after the disappointing start this season. Therefore, ‘Seb’ postpones the decision of his continuity to the results of the next races.
Just a few days ago, Aston Martin declared his love for the driver, but whether it is mutual will depend on the performance of the car. Mike Krack, team principal, was blunt: “If you see him in a meeting or on the phone, the way he gets involved, nobody drives like that if they don’t want to drive. Nobody acts like that if they don’t want to drive,” he said.
“When you have someone like Sebastian, you have to try to keep him. He is a mixture of extreme driving qualities, experience and a very positive person who helps us to progress. Clearly we want to continue with Sebastian. We will see everything else later, “he added in a few statements offered to the television channel ‘n-tv’.
But the reality is that 2022 is proving to be a difficult year for the German, who missed the first two rounds of the World Cup and, despite improving his performance and starting to score points, he does not consider it enough.
“When you have the opportunity to know the sport in the way that Lewis and I have, winning and being at the top, that’s what you fight for,” he said.
“Are you excited to finish eighth or 12th or 13th? No it doesn’t, especially when you know you’ve been first a lot of times and in Lewis’s case more than any other guy. George comes in. He spent three years at Williams suffering at the back of the grid, rarely scoring points and then suddenly he’s 8th or 12th and life for him is impressive,” he added to ‘Sky F1’.
Vettel understands that for George Russell it is a great illusion to be in the points zone every weekend, but the opposite happens if we are talking about a seven-time world champion.
“Everyone is different, but you need to be fair from the outside and say, look, is Lewis going to be as motivated to finish eighth as George probably is? No and I’d be surprised if he was.”
And it is that Vettel knows what it means to win up to four world championships, which is why the current situation causes the idea of retiring to fly through his head: “I don’t know what my future will be like after saying goodbye to Formula 1, but I don’t think no athlete really knows. The truth is that you never have the absolute truth. My future depends on this year and the races that we will have next.”
In addition, he confirms that the negotiations with Aston Martin have not even started: “Summer is normally when these types of talks start. Nothing has been decided yet.” “I have participated in motor racing all my life and that gives me confidence when it comes to organizing my own calendar,” he stressed.
“I don’t expect to find anything in the future that I’m really good at, I already found racing and it’s hard for anything else to come back. It’s like winning the lottery. I like to drive, but there are other things that I don’t quite like either. After so many years, there are things that you do not fully understand, such as travel. For this, it is necessary to invest a lot of time and you cannot be with the children and the family at home, “he concluded.
