The Suns continue in perfect step in the NBA
Chris Paul scored 21 points and handed out 10 assists, Jae Crowder added 19 units – his best record of the campaign – and the Phoenix Suns defeated the Spurs 108-104 on Monday night of San Antonio.
The eternal Paul had several highlights in the final minutes, helping the Suns become the first team with 20 wins this season.
36-year-old Paul made his mark on defense with a great play in which he deflected Dejounte Murray’s ball as he was about to score with 1:30 left, reducing Phoenix’s lead to just one point. Instead, the ball bounced off Murray before leaving the court.
Seconds later, the veteran added a Shoot from mid-range while fouled. Paul converted the free throw and three-point play to make the score 108-102.
Phoenix played his first game since an 18-game winning streak was broken last Friday against Golden State. The Suns were unperturbed by the stumble and they reached 19 wins in their last 20 games since Oct. 27.
The Spurs had a four-game winning streak snapped. All five San Antonio starters scored in double digits, led by 17 points from Murray. Bryn Forbes contributed 15 units as a substitute.
The Suns came to have an advantage of 16 goals at the end of the third quarter, but they settled for a difference 79-79 after three periods. The Spurs gradually narrowed the margin until Doug McDermott hit a 3-pointer that tied the score at 88 with 6:10 to play.
From that moment the meeting remained tight, although the Suns were never at a disadvantage. Cam Johnson – who scored 13 points – hit a triple with 1:10 left that put them up 103-97.
