Puerto Rico didn’t have the best weekend in rental boxing.
Puerto Rican fighters Josué “The Prodigy” Vargas and Carlos “Purín” Caraballo were defeated in their respective commitments on Saturday, on a card held at Madison Square Garden, in New York.
Vargas suffered the hardest of defeats by succumbing three times to Mexican José “Chon” Zepeda (35-2 and 27 KO’s) during the first round of the main event, which motivated the referee to stop the fight at minute 1 :Four. Five.
The Aztec retained the World Boxing Organization (WBO) silver super lightweight crown.
For his part, Caraballo lost undefeated when he fell by unanimous decision to the Filipino Jonas Sultan (18-5 and 11 KO’s) in the co-star.
Vargas – who saw his record drop to 19-2 and 9 KO’s – had been proclaiming himself the best fighter at 140 pounds, shortly before starring in two clashes with Zepeda during the weigh-in ceremony.
