Maia Chaka made history this Sunday by becoming the first African-American woman to referee an game. Chaka led the game between the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte and is now the third female referee on an NFL field.

“This historic moment is an honor for me and a privilege that I have been chosen to represent women and women of color in America’s most popular sport,” Chaka said in a video tweeted by the NFL.

Chaka joins Sarah Thomas, the first permanent female referee, already Shannon Eastin, who was the first woman in officiating an NFL game. This PE teacher has previously led meetings at the NCAA Pac-12 conference and the USA Conference.
