TEL AVIV, Oct 12 (dpa / EP) –
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has canceled a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in protest at his participation in an event at the Museum of Tolerance built on top of a Muslim cemetery in East Jerusalem.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the PFA regretted that Infantino’s attendance at the museum represents a “total affront to the values of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence” of FIFA.
Infantino attended the event on Monday along with former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman. Israel has recently normalized relations with its Arab neighbors, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, and the FIFA president indicated that this could help the region host international competitions.
In 2018, FIFA banned PFA President Jibril Rajoub for a year after he asked fans to burn Lionel Messi shirts and posters if he played a friendly between Argentina and Israel in Jerusalem, a match that was ultimately discarded.
