Sometimes, athletes tend to have the aptitude to practice more than one discipline at a professional level. This could be the case of Osvaldo ‘Pata Bendita’ Castro who was a soccer player in Chile and Mexico. However, the former forward assured that he had the possibility of reaching the NFL as a kicker and that he had approaches from franchises such as the Rams, the Cowboys and the Redskins (now the Washington Commanders).
In an interview for As Mexico in 2016, Osvaldo Castro revealed that, close to his retirement as a soccer player, he was called to train as a kicker, drawing the attention of the Rams “I told him yes, if there is contact with all pleasure. So when he had retired me he took me to Tec de Monterrey to train. I spent hours working, perfecting the hit and the distance. I was there for about a month and the following month one of the people who were looking for football players called me and Eduardo told me that they had contacted me with the Los Angeles Rams. I was there for about a month training with the kicker who played and the kicker coach. And he liked him a lot because from the 10 yard of ten shots he scored ten; of the 20, he put ten; from the 30, he put in ten; of the 40, he got ten; from the 45, he scored eight; of the 49, he scored seven and of the 50, he scored four, so the average was very strong”.
However, he assured that his intention was not to leave the country because he already had other work commitments. “They wanted me to stay in the university, not in the first team, and here (in Mexico) I had prepared my (soccer) school, I couldn’t let everyone down. They (the Rams) wanted me to work four months before playing on the first team, but it was a long time and I didn’t want to drop out of school.”
On the other hand, he also revealed that, previously, the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys, but he preferred to continue his career as a footballer. “I came here and they called me the Washington Redskins. A telegram came because they’re always watching the kickers and they saw me there and they wanted me to go to Washington, but no, I’m coming back here. (…) In America they were not going to let me, I was very young, I had just arrived at the club and I was a top scorer, so they were not going to let me. There I recommended Septién and he ended up being the kicker for the Dallas”.
