Players from the dissident league LIV Golf will be allowed to participate in the 150th edition of the British Open, the organization of the 'Major'

Players from the dissident league LIV Golf will be allowed to participate in the 150th edition of the British Open, the organization of the ‘Major’ tournament, which will take place from July 14 to 17, announced on Tuesday.

Golfers enrolled in the lucrative LIV, financed by Saudi Arabia, have already been authorized to participate in the US Open, another ‘Major’ that was played last week.

“Players (directly qualified) or those who have earned their place by qualifying for the 150th Open, in accordance with the entry rules, will be allowed to participate in the tournament at St Andrews,” said British Open Director Martin Slumbers.

The PGA Tour, which organizes the American golf circuit, decided to ban golfers who participate in the dissident circuit from registering for its tournaments.

But according to several media outlets, the PGA would be preparing a counteroffensive to try to win back golfers who have gone over to the competition, including big names like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau.

This information indicates that the PGA would like to increase from 2023 the endowment of eight renowned tournaments to at least 20 million dollars and introduce three new tournaments endowed with 25 million dollars each, without cut, as in circuit competitions. LIV.

The calendar could also evolve with a season based on the calendar year, between January and December, while currently the PGA Tour starts in the fall.

The first LIV Golf League tournament took place at the beginning of June in London, with the participation of 17 members of the PGA Tour, all excluded from the American circuit until further notice. The winner, the South African Charl Schwartzel, returned home with a check for 4 million dollars (3.82 million euros) under his arm.
