MILAN (AP).- From the 2022/2023 seasonthe title of the italian league will have to be decided by a playoff, if the top two in the table finish tied with the same number of points. The Italian Football Federation announced the change in the regulation after receiving the approval of the clubs of the A series.

Prior to the 2005/06 season, Italy resorted to a playoff in the event of ties for places that decided the title, relegation or places in the European cups. Several other leagues, such as the English Premier League, use goal difference as the first tiebreaker.

The only time a playoff defined the Serie A champion was in 1964, when Bologna defeated Inter 2-0 to obtain the last of their seven scudettos. If the direct results had been used, Inter would have been consecrated.
