Razlan Razali believes Darryn Binder can do ‘something magical’ in MotoGP

The biggest surprise among the rookies of the 2022 MotoGP season is Darryn Binder, the first since Jack Miller to come up straight from Moto3. Petronas Sprinta Racing had him in their ranks last year in Moto3, and trainer Razlan Razali saw in Binder the potential for strong MotoGP results by bringing him to the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team.

The Malaysian told that last year he saw a disciplined driver with a good attitude and talent, but at a disadvantage due to unknown factors: “What we saw with Darryn the year he was with us was a very good attitude, a very disciplined person, a nice person, okay, being nice doesn’t make you win! But with his physical build he is too big for Moto3 and the Moto3 Honda has a power disadvantage compared to the KTM. That was very clear. So I had that drawback».

Even in the context he faced, Binder posted convincing results, including two podium finishes and a consistent top ten attendance. Razali highlighted the South African’s ability to react to adversity: «The way he recovered in each race; with one or two laps I was already in the front group. He overtook it inside, outside. It was unlucky for him to beat Dennis Foggia [en el GP de Algarve]. But given the way he raced last year, we thought if this rider got a chance on a bigger bike, a setup like Yamaha, he could do something magical. So that was the potential we saw in him.».
