BUENOS AIRES, Aug 7 (Reuters) – River Plate won an agonizing 1-0 win on Sunday from their visit to Independiente de Avellaneda in one of the classics of Argentine soccer, as part of the twelfth round of the Professional League.

With the victory, River reached 18 points to be in seventh place in the standings, seven points behind the leader Atlético Tucumán and below Gimnasia and Esgrima, Unión de Santa Fe, Racing Club, Argentinos Juniors and Huracán.

“Many important matches escaped us. We knew that if we want to be champions and fight for the championship, today was a final”, said Bruno Zuculini after the victory.

The only goal of the match played at the Libertadores de América stadium – Ricardo Bochini was scored by Matías Suárez in the 92nd minute, after taking advantage of a rebound inside the area.

In another game on Sunday, Huracán beat Aldosivi de Mar del Plata 1-0 as a visitor thanks to a penalty scored by Franco Cristaldo in the 88th minute.

For their part, San Lorenzo de Almagro and Estudiantes de La Plata equalized without goals, the same result that Newell’s Old Boys of Rosario and Colón of Santa Fe obtained.

On Saturday, Boca Juniors beat Platense 2-1, Talleres beat Argentinos Juniors 2-0, Unión beat Vélez Sarsfield 2-1 and leader Atlético Tucumán lost 3-1 to Arsenal. While Barracas Central and Racing tied 0-0.
