BUENOS AIRES, Aug 27 (Reuters) – River Plate, one of the most popular clubs in Argentine soccer, drew 1-1 on Saturday against Tigre and continues its irregular campaign in the framework of the sixteenth date of the Professional League .
With the tie, River was sixth in the standings with 26 points in the standings, product of seven wins, five draws and four losses, six points behind the leader Atlético Tucumán.
The team led by Marcelo Gallardo opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Pablo Solari, while Tigre equalized in the 70th minute through a penalty kick scored by Mateo Retegui.
The local team was left with one man less at 89 minutes due to the expulsion of Víctor Cabrera, who received the red card for an infraction against the Uruguayan Nicolás De la Cruz.
“We got an important point against a very difficult opponent like River. In the second half we got back to our level and were able to tie,” Tigre striker Facundo Colidio told local television.
Earlier, in a match played at the Mario Kempes stadium in Córdoba, Talleres and Racing Club tied 1-1 with goals from Colombian Diego Valoyes and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively.
“There are adjustments and corrections to be made to fight for the top at the end of the tournament. Football is not about merit: we have to convert the situations we create,” said Racing coach Fernando Gago after the draw.
In other matches on Saturday, Defensa and Justicia beat Banfield 2-1, Platense beat Argentinos Juniors 2-0, Godoy Cruz beat Newell’s Old Boys 2-1, while San Lorenzo and Rosario Central tied 1-1.
On Friday, Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero and Lanús tied 2-2, while Arsenal de Sarandí and Huracán tied 1-1.
