Romero is a leader at El Tigre Golf Club

NUEVO VALLARTA, Mexico – Four birdies in his first six holes led Mexico's Cristian Romero to an 8-under 64 in his first round of the Dev Serie

NUEVO VALLARTA, Mexico – Four birdies in his first six holes led Mexico’s Cristian Romero to an 8-under 64 in his first round of the Dev Series Final. This result allows him to be in first place on the standings at El Tigre Club de Golf.

One shot behind the 28-year-old were Americans Derek Castillo and Josh Goldenberg. Castillo was dispatched with a round free of bogeys in which five birdies and an eagle stood out on the par-5 of the 9th hole. For Goldenberg, being in Nuevo Vallarta is the perfect opportunity to once again secure conditions on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. The previous season he finished in 63rd place in the Totalplay Cup points list.

With a round of 66 strokes, the American Brax McCarthy took fourth place after the first 18 holes of play on the course designed by the team of Robert Von Hagge, Mike Smelek and Rick Baril. The native of Fort Worth, Texas, reached the 18th hole with a bogey-free course. However, a bogey in the 18th did not allow him to be higher in the general.

The fifth place, with individual rounds of 68 strokes, was divided between the Mexicans Gonzalo Rubio and Oscar Fraustro and the Chilean, two-time winner on the European Tour, Felipe Aguilar.

Aguilar, winner of one of the 13 events that made up the 2021-22 Dev Series schedule, started the day with a double-bogey on his first hole but recovered with four birdies between holes 3 and 8 to make the crossing in 4-under par. For the return leg, the Chilean had a bogey-free course in which he recorded birdies at 10, 14 and 16.

“I hit the ball very well and was very consistent from tee to green. The putt was key because I was able to take a lot of opportunities in the first part of the round. In general, it was a very solid job that I did today”, said Romero about his presentation on Thursday at El Tigre Club de Golf.

In addition to the four birdies he registered at the start of the round, Romero added one more on the par-5 of the 9th to reach the last nine holes with a boost. His only bogey of the day was on the 11th but he made up for it with birdies on the 10th, 14th, 15th and 17th, respectively.

“I have been to this field several times. In fact, I played this very event last year and finished top-10 after a 7-under final round. This place definitely brings back good memories. The course is in better condition, especially some bunkers,” said Romero, who is from Mexico City.

Since 2015, Romero has had the opportunity to play a total of 18 events on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. In 2018 it was the year that he played the most events; eight and his best result was a tie for 26th place in the San Luis Championship.

“I had conditional status for last season on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, but I really didn’t have a travel budget. I focused on playing the Mexican Tour and felt very comfortable. I finished in 17th place in the ranking, so I’m in a very good moment in my career”, concluded Romero.

In addition to a US$40,000 prize pool, the field is battling this week for memberships for the upcoming PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season. Players who finish the week in the top-5 will secure full status, while those who place between 6th and 10th will be exempt for the first half of the schedule. For their part, those who finish between 11th and 15th place, in addition to those between 16th and 20th and tied, will receive two different types of categories with conditional status.
