BUENOS AIRES, Jul 9 (Reuters) – San Lorenzo de Almagro overcame an adverse score and beat Boca Juniors 2-1 at home on Saturday in one of the most popular classics of Argentine soccer, in a day in which the leader Newell’s equalized with Platense.

Within the framework of the seventh day of the Professional League, San Lorenzo got its first victory at home, while Boca added its third consecutive defeat in the competition.

“It was the most complete game. In the growth that we are having as a team, I think that today’s performance was very even, sustained throughout the 90 minutes,” said the technical director Rubén Insua after the victory.

Boca opened the scoring in the 28th minute through a header from Marcos Rojo, while San Lorenzo came from behind with goals from Agustín Giay and Paraguayan Adam Bareiro in the 38th and 54th minutes.

The local team wasted a penalty in the 75th minute through Bareiro, who shot wide in front of goalkeeper Agustín Rossi.

In another match on Saturday, leaders Newell’s Old Boys from Rosario and Platense drew 1-1 with goals from Marcos Ledesma on his own fence and Juan Cruz Esquivel, respectively.

With the tie, the group from the city of Rosario was on top alone with 15 units, with a difference of one point over Gimnasia and Esgrima La Plata, which will play against Atlético Tucumán on Sunday.

“It was a tough game, worked on, we knew it was going to be like that. In the second half it cost us a bit and we couldn’t take the result,” said Newell’s defender Cristian Lema after the away draw.

On the other hand, Unión de Santa Fe beat Banfield 3-2, Arsenal de Sarandí defeated Patronato de Paraná 1-0 and Barracas Central beat Talleres de Córdoba 2-0.

On Friday, Rosario Central got its first victory under the technical direction of Carlos Tevez by beating Sarmiento de Junín 1-0 at home. (Reporting by Ramiro Scandolo. Editing by Carlos Calvo Pacheco)
