Spain-Portugal Summit to host the 2030 Soccer World Cup | WORLD

The top football leaders of Spain and Portugal, as well as representatives of both countries, met on Monday to discuss an Iberian bid for the 2030

The top football leaders of Spain and Portugal, as well as representatives of both countries, met on Monday to discuss an Iberian bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The summit was held in the sports city of the Portuguese national team, with the participation of the presidents of the federations of Spain and Portugal, Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes, respectively.

Government officials were also present to finalize details on a bid that “is entering its final phase,” the Spanish federation said.

“The governments of Spain and Portugal have been integrated into this decisive meeting, and have participated in all matters of an operational and strategic nature”, highlighted the governing body of Spanish football.

“The work teams of both federations today share different materials to further enhance the construction after many months of work on an exciting and winning proposal,” he added.

Morocco had previously been included as a participant in the bid, but was ultimately left out.

Portugal hosted the 2004 European Championship and the 2019 Nations League.

Spain hosted the 1982 World Cup and the 1982 Barcelona Olympics. They have not been victorious in several attempts to obtain another Olympic site.

The Iberian candidacy would come up against a joint project from Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. The South Americans want to appeal to the nostalgic factor that in 2030 the centenary of the first World Cup will be celebrated, staged in Uruguay.

Qatar will host later this year and the 2026 tournament will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
