In the last ten years it has become one of the backbone elements of tourism for the Region, registering the highest growth of fields in all of Spain

Golf is the spearhead of the region’s sports tourism offer. Not only does it contribute to reducing seasonality, since its high season is outside the summer, but it also helps to create employment and contributes to spending in the Region that exceeds 265 million euros per year.

In the last ten years, this tourism modality has become one of the backbone of tourism for the Region, registering the highest growth in golf courses in all of Spain, after going from having four courses in 2003 to 20 today. .

Among these, the first federative field, located in the Montepríncipe urbanization, in Molina de Segura, was inaugurated today, in a ceremony attended by the Minister of the Presidency, Tourism and Sports, Marcos Ortuño, along with the presidents of the Spanish federation and from the Region of Murcia, Gonzaga Escauriaza and Juan Carlos Martínez Vela, respectively.

“The regional government works to give a boost to golf tourism and position the Community as a preferred destination at the national level but, above all, international,” explained Ortuño, who emphasized “the potential it has in the areas of Murcia, Águilas, La Manga and the Mar Menor, where facilities with avant-garde designs and high-quality complexes are concentrated; many hours of sunshine in the autumn and winter months and a complementary offer that includes culture, festivals, leisure, food and wine, health and nautical ”.

The importance it represents for the tourism sector is evident in the activity figures for 2019, when 165,000 golf tourists visited the Region (79 percent foreign), which caused two million overnight stays, many of them in the middle season and come down. In total, they recorded an expense of 265 million euros, which represents approximately 8.1 percent of total tourism income.

In addition to the direct impact on regional production, golf companies generate indirect and induced spending estimated at 128.2 million euros, which would mean that golf generated a total of 393.5 million euros in the Region in 2019.

On the other hand, and within the importance of this sport in economic activity, it should be noted that golf courses generate about a thousand jobs.

Reactivation plan

The counselor advanced that the regional government, in collaboration with the Association of Golf Entrepreneurs of the Region of Murcia, has designed a “reactivation plan to relaunch such an important tourist segment due to the volume of tourists and overnight stays in recent years and that we want to recover after the pandemic ”.

In this sense, the Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism and Sports has allocated a budget of 250,000 euros to formalize agreements with the main tour operators of the national and European market and a campaign to promote large spaces for playing golf in the Region, as well like its main complexes, resorts and sports infrastructures, its weather and the wide complementary offer and the fact that tourists can live here a complete and unforgettable experience impossible to find anywhere else.

In addition, this plan is complemented by the promotional actions of the Murcia Region Tourism Institute, which also involve an investment of close to 100,000 euros, and with the agreement for the promotion of the brand ‘Costa Cálida de la Región de Murcia ‘in Senior golf, signed with the Spanish Association of Golf Seniors.

To these actions is added the sponsorship of tournaments, attendance at fairs and communication campaigns in specialized media and on social networks.
