The new Atleti takes shape

Atlético’s fans bid farewell to three of their captains, Amanda Sampedro, Silvia Meseguer and Laia Aleixandri, with all their affection, more than a month ago in the last League match played in Alcalá. “It’s a change of cycle,” explained Lola Romero, director of women’s football at the rojiblanco club, to AS. And the new one is already starting with a very active summer market for the reconstruction of a squad that aspires to get back into the Champions League. In the 2021-22 campaign they were left at the gates with the defeat against Barça on the last day. In 2022-23 they don’t want it to slip away again.

To do this, Atleti, which Óscar Fernández will direct for the second season, must overcome the casualties of a good handful of footballers. His sports management, headed by María Vargas and to which former agent Roberto Ricobaldi arrived at the beginning of last season, is working on it. The Amanda, Meseguer and Aleixandri, were joined by the ‘goodbye’ of Deyna Castellanos, Lindahl and Tounkara.

The defence, which was hit hard, has already been reinforced with the additions of German central defender Merle Barth, from Turbine Potsdam, and Xènia Pérez, from Espanyol. In addition, as AS announced last week, the arrival of Cinta Rodríguez is also expected, who said goodbye to Sporting Huelva after seven seasons as a Blue and White.

In midfield, Irene Guerrero is the most impressive signing to date. The Sevillian has been a fixture in her two seasons at Levante and her performance in the latter has earned her a chance to go to the European Championship in England with La Roja, with whom she scored a double against Australia in her first warm-up friendly.

Meanwhile, Staskova, from Juventus, has arrived in the attack. However, several more arrivals are expected, in addition to that of Cinta, and the forward is one of the lines with the most ballots to be reinforced. The goal, another. Nor should we forget that the mattress club has already moved this summer for the pearl of Spanish women’s football Vicky López and her bid for the young player, currently at Madrid CFF, is strong.

While the official announcements continue these days, what is clear is that the new Atleti is taking shape. And he wants to aim high.
