3,000 palm trees spread over more than 800,000 square metres, 27 holes –18 on the main course and 9 on the secondary–, wide and wide fairways greens configure the first course to be inaugurated in designed in 1976 by the great South African player Gary Player together with his partner Rob Kirby. The greens of Almerimar they merge with the clayey browns of the reliefs that this town of El Ejido gathers over its infinite greenhouses.

“Many Nordic and Icelandic golfers arrive,” he tells Condé Nast Traveler Juan Parrón, renowned golfer who runs the field. “They come from autumn to spring, taking advantage of the good weather in the area and they stay for about six days.” International players join nationals, experts and noviceslooking for new places to play.

“It is a field that offers a lot”, adds Juan showing the possibilities that lakes and palm trees as obstacles in the game. As for Almerimar’s commitment to the environment, they use Bermuda-type grass in the greens: “Requires less water and does not mow so often, so we use fewer machines.”

Those who wish to improve their technique or start in this sport can also do so through the Almerimar Golf School selecting the course that best suits your preferences: “It is a sport that when you start to feel it, hook”.

Touring the countryside in a buggy, we talked to Juan about stress and how much it affects us on a day-to-day basis. “Golf allows you to disconnect from everything to concentrate on the now”he comments, “it’s a mindfulness obligatory, a wonderful discipline for various aspects of life”.
