Three adult soccer players can play in the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 in U23 men’s soccer
July 18, 2022: The Chilean Under 23 team, commanded by Eduardo Berizzo, works in a microcycle with an immediate objective, since this Wednesday the 20th it will face its similar team from Uruguay in Iquique. An appointment that the Cordovan coach hopes to use to renew the international contingent for the new World Cup cycle.
The list has more than one surprise, such as the inclusion of Juan Tobar, from General Velásquez, and that of Brian Cortes, A 27-year-old goalkeeper from Colo Colo who put himself under Toto’s orders to meet the coaching staff, after being left out of the tour of the adult team due to injury. But why is the goalkeeper, if he does not give the age of the category?
From Juan Pinto Durán they confirm the reason for “meeting” Berizzo and company, but also a preview that may be linked to the most important multi-sport event in the history of Chile: the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games, which will be held between October and November of next year.
As Redgol was able to confirm, the men’s soccer competition will be for the Under 23 category, born after January 1, 2000. But there is a license for the teams and it is the inclusion of three players above the set agein the purest style occupied in the Olympic Games.
An opportunity for the Golden Generation?
Many remember the presence of three World Cup players from France 98, Nelson Tapia (34 years old), Pedro Reyes (28) and Iván Zamorano (33) in the Chilean Olympic team that won the bronze medal in Sydney 2000, as additions to the U23 squad formed by Nelson Acosta and Gustavo Huerta.
In the same way, in Santiago 2023 La Roja will be able to count on elements superior to the category, and the range is very wide. But no one can deny that the possibility of having some banners of the Golden Generation, which today are well over 30 years old, can be a very special ingredient for the Pan-American event.
The problem will be permissions. The men’s soccer competition will run from October 23 to November 4, and will be played in its entirety at the Elías Figueroa Brander stadium in Valparaíso. Unfortunately, there is no obligation to release players by FIFA date, as these extend just before and after Santiago 2023.
The FIFA schedule establishes international days from October 9 to 17 and November 13 to 21 of next year, which will almost certainly be the stage for the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. In this way, the presence of the players will depend of the disposition of the clubs.
Will they be able to come to Santiago 2023?
To have the old banners of the Golden Generation, the Chilean team will have to appeal to good will. There are some with advanced work, such as the two-time champions of America who have already returned to Chile and whose last case corresponds to Mauricio Isla. Others are in South America, such as Arturo Vidal (Flamengo) and Eduardo Vargas (Atlético Mineiro).
The rest remains in Europe, for now. Alexis Sanchez, Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel and Charles Aránguiz end their respective contracts with Inter, Bologna, Betis and Bayer Leverkusen precisely in June 2023. Perhaps this is the occasion to negotiate a transfer with a special Pan-American request.
The Women’s Red will have no age limit
The panorama in women’s soccer looks better, since the participating teams in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will not have an age limit for their participants. In that sense, La Roja will be able to count on the best exponents in its history, such as Christiane Endler and Francisca Lara.
In the event that the Fem Roja qualifies for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the Copa América that is taking place these days in Colombia, the Games can be a great opportunity for preparation. However, the FIFA date does not exactly match the tournament that will be played at the Sausalito stadium in Viña del Mar.
The futfem in Santiago 2023 will be played from October 22 to November 3, while the ad hoc FIFA date extends between October 23 and 31, so it will take a phone call between Panam Sports and FIFA before being able to have the historic national teams.
