Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam won two gold medals to take fifth place at the recently concluded Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Phuket.
Vietnamese boxers also collected one silver and seven bronzes.
World number 7 Nguyen Thi Tam had no worthy rivals in the women’s 51kg category. In the final, she defeated Aira Villegas of the Philippines 5-0 to take the first award of Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Vo Thi Kim Anh won the women’s 54 kilogram category. In the final match, the 25-year-old defeated European Under-22 world champion Sirine Charaabi of Italy.
Previously, Tran Thi Oanh Nhi took a silver medal in the women’s 75 kilograms after losing to Hergie Bacyadan of the Philippines.
Of the seven bronzes from Vietnam, one was in the women’s category and six in the men’s.
The host team Thailand topped the overall ranking with four golds, six silvers and seven bronzes.
The Open of Thailand is one of the largest boxing events in the world and attracted the participation of 130 elite boxers from April 1 to 10 on the island of Phuket.
Vietnamese athletes will continue training in Phuket in preparation for the XXXI Southeast Asian Sports Games (SEA Games 31) and will return to the country at the end of this month./.
