MEXICO CITY, February 16 (EL UNIVERSAL).- The Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera occupies a special place in the history of boxing. His great fights, achievements and rivalries, such as the one he had with Erik “El Terrible” Morales, led him to be loved by many people in the world, one of them being former soccer player Wayne Rooney.
The historic scorer for Manchester United and the England National Team, has a taste for boxing and was a great follower of Marco Antonio Barrera, as the Mexican fighter revealed in an interview.
“El Barreta” had a great friendship with the English boxer Ricky Hatton, who in turn was a friend of Rooney. Barrera saw the former soccer player several times, but he really did not know who he was. “My son saw a picture with Hatton and Rooney and he was like, ‘Do you know Rooney?’ And I was like, ‘Who’s that guy?'”
But after seeing the photo, Barrera recognized him, “Of course! Hatton’s friend. He was in all my fights. He likes the Mexican style, he always goes,” said the former world champion in three different categories.
In addition, Barrera recalled how Rooney would spend it when he attended his fights in Las Vegas, “He would go into the ring with me. I would fight, win and then Hatton and Rooney would stay in a restaurant bar, I would have dinner and leave. The next day I would find them and they kept cheering. I didn’t know who he was,” he accepted.
It is well known that Rooney is a great boxing fan, in fact, he trained him before practicing football, where he made his debut at Everton, triumphed at Manchester United and his last moments as a footballer were spent at DC United and Derby County .
